MAC OS 32/64bit (version: 1.5 – 2018/07/05) This driver is for MacOS Sierra/High Sierra. Do not install the drivers for the Mojave, because it seems that the latest versions are equipped with the built CH340/CH341 support. (MAC OS 32/64bit) for MacOS Sierra/High Sierra. Unplug any CH34. devices. Unload the old drivers if. Step 4: Now go on to download the Arduino IDE on your Mac. To do this, open Safari on your Mac and just go to the website www.arduino.cc. Once you have opened the website, go to the software section and click on downloads from the dropdown menu. Now select the Mac OS X version, hit download and wait for the download to finish. So I removed the FTDI drivers from my Mac so it will use Apple's drivers. Now even after doing all this when I connect my Arduino Uno to my Mac via the USB it does not get detected. I removed the kext and pkg files for the FTDI drivers and deleted them completely, still when I open the System Report I still see the FTDI USB Serial Driver entry.

Since our boards use an FTDI chip for USB-to-serial communication, we have witnessed some of these issues when working with our boards using Mac and macOS.

1. Overview
We use the Silicon Labs CP2102 USB-to-UART Bridge Controller in several of our products to provide USB connectivity while communicating via a simple serial protocol. It is the key component of our Pololu USB-to-serial adapter:

and is also used in our Orangutan USB Programmer, USB 16-Servo Controller, and Orangutan X2. These CP2102-based products feature a mini-B connector, so you will need a USB A to mini-B cable to connect them to one of your computer’s USB ports. Once the appropriate drivers are installed for your system, the CP2102 will look like a standard serial port. This document provides you with the necessary drivers along with installation instructions.
2. Windows Drivers and Installation Instructions
Before you connect your Pololu CP2102 device to a computer running Microsoft Windows, you should install its drivers:
- Download the CP2102 drivers for Windows (4MB zip).
- IMPORTANT: You must extract the zip archive into a temporary directory. attempt to double-click or run any of the files until you have extracted them.
- Open the temporary directory and run the appropriate executable. If you have a 64-bit operating system, you should run pololu-cp2102-setup-x64.exe. If you have a 32-bit operating system, you should run pololu-cp2102-setup-x86.exe.
- During the installation, Windows will ask you if you want to install the drivers. Click “Install” (Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista) or “Continue Anyway” (Windows XP).
- The installer should complete successfully.
Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista users: Your computer should now automatically install the necessary drivers when you connect a Pololu CP2102 device. No further action from you is required.
Windows XP users: You need to follow steps 6–10 for each new device you connect to your computer.
- Connect the device to your computer’s USB port. Your computer will detect the new hardware and open the Found New Hardware Wizard.
- When the Found New Hardware Wizard is displayed, select “No, not this time” and click “Next”.
- On the second screen of the Found New Hardware Wizard, select “Install the software automatically” and click “Next”.
- Windows XP will warn you again that the driver has not been tested by Microsoft and recommend that you stop the installation. Click “Continue Anyway”.
- When you have finished the Found New Hardware Wizard, click “Finish”.
If you now go to your computer’s Device Manager and expand the “Ports (COM & LPT)” list, you should see “Pololu USB-to-Serial Adapter” as one of the COM ports.

Some software will not allow connection to higher COM port numbers. If you need to change the COM port number assigned to your USB adapter, you can do so using the Windows device manager. Bring up the properties dialog for the “Pololu USB-to-Serial Adapter” COM port and click the “Advanced…” button in the “Port Settings” tab. From this dialog you can change the COM port assigned to your device.
3. Mac OS X Drivers
To use the CP2102 on a computer running Mac OS X, you should download and install the CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers from Silicon Labs for Mac OS X.
Additionally, we have older drivers that other customers have used successfully on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs running OS X version 10.3.9 or later, but these probably will not work on version 10.7 or later. You can download these drivers here: OSX_cp2102_drivers.dmg (723k dmg)
Mac OS X compatibility: We have confirmed that our CP2102-based devices work on Mac OS X 10.7 and other customers have used them successfully on older versions. We can assist with advanced technical issues, but most of our tech support staff does not use Macs, so basic support for Mac OS X is limited.
4. Linux Installation
Recent versions of the linux kernel include support for the CP2102 USB-to-UART Bridge Controller as part of the usb-serial driver, so your Pololu CP2102 should work right out of the box. We have verified that the CP2102 works with Ubuntu versions 7.04 and 8.04. If you experience any problems, we recommend you upgrade to the most recent version of your distribution.

The first time using a new microcontroller is what I call funstrating, especially if you don’t have clear instructions. We’ve done the hard work of figuring out the NodeMCU drivers and NodeMCU Arduino IDE setup for you. Read on for the two steps that have to be done only once. More helpful info at the end, too.
Installing NodeMCU drivers for USB
This part of the instructions are written for Windows. They’re very similar for OSX and Linux.
Mostly these days devices download and install drivers on their own, automagically. Unfortunately as of writing this post when I plug a brand new NodeMCU into a new Windows 10 installation with a micro USB cable I get a warning message that says “USB Device Not Recognized – Device Descriptor Request Failed”.
Windows doesn’t know how to talk to the USB driver on the NodeMCU so it can’t figure out that the board is a NodeMCU and proceed normally. You’ll need to download the official driver and install it yourself.

Mac Arduino Driver Downloads
Download and extract the files, then run the Windows 10 installer. NodeMCU should now appear as a COM port on your Windows 10 computer.

Upgrade Arduino Boards Manager
We’re almost done! This next bit is pretty easy. Arduino has a list of possible microcontrollers (boards) that it can support if you ask it to add support. This does two useful things: it keeps the download smaller for them (less $) and it means new users are not swamped with lots of options they may never use. We need to add NodeMCU to the list of possible microcontrollers and then tell Arduion “Please download and install support for NodeMCU.”
Fire up Arduino IDE and go to File > Preferences.
In the field that says “Additional Boards Manager URLs” add “http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json” and hit OK. Now your Arduino IDE knows that NodeMCU boards exist.
go to Tools > Boards > Boards Manager
There are a lot of boards here! In the search field type “esp8266”, which is the name of the Wifi module at the heart of the NodeMCU.
You can see in my copy I’ve already installed the plugin. Click once anywhere on the description text. A button labelled “install” will appear nearby. The location is inconsistent, and IMHO the button should always be visible if the plugin has not been installed. Click it and the installation process will begin. As of this writing it has to download ~150mb of data. Once it’s done, close the Boards Manager.
To back to Tools > Boards and you will find the list is now quite a bit longer.
Choose your flavor of NodeMCU (probably 1.0 ESP-12E Module) and start coding.

NodeMCU example sketches
Examples for any given board type should appear under File > Examples. Examples are tailored to the type of board that you have currently selected. If you don’t see any NodeMCU or ESP examples, double check that you have Tools > Boards > [your NodeMCU flavor] selected. One time I changed board type to UNO and all my NodeMCU examples vanished. So confusing!

Final thoughts
- Sketch upload time is long compared to UNO or Mega. Still worth it!
- When using digitalWrite(), use digitalWrite(D0) instead of digitalWrite(0) and so on. Pin mapping on the NodeMCU is weird.
- Wifi sketches need the SSID and password of your local Wifi network in order to connect. In the top of most sketches you’ll find a field “….” that should be replaced with your wifi SSID and/or wifi password.
